Bang & Olufsen Earset Premium Wireless Earphones – Graphite Brown : Gorgeous looking – brilliant sound, if they fit

I have been lucky enough to try b&o’s e6 earphones recently as well as these and i’ve had comfort issues with both. The sound is great but will take a bit of getting used to. I had become very used to the bass-boosted tones of my on-ear headphones and these sounded very tinny at first. Part of this is to do with getting the correct fit with the earbuds (something i’m still not 100% happy with) but they also have a far more complex sound range than my previous headphones and that took some time for my ears to adjust to, along with the time it will take any pair of earphones to season. I was hoping that the ear hooks on these would solve the problems i was having with comfort with the e6s but if anything these are worse. If too loose they don’t help at all and if too tight they end up fatiguing the ear so that more than about 45 min-an hour becomes too painful for me. I’ll keep trying to find the right fit (there are at least options here with earbuds and positioning of the hook) but i’m not sure these are for me.

Unboxing the earset was a delight – they are beautifully presented and made out of premium materials – as well as the earset you get a canvas pouch, a usb c charging cable and a quick start guide. The look of these is simply stunning but they do require some getting to grips with – the earset has adjustable, flexible ear hooks which allow you to position the buds in the right position for your ears – but at first it’s a fiddle to get this right and it took me a while to find the sweet spot – then a few days to get the hang of getting them off and on quickly and easily. And i believe this is the principle reason for the very mixed reviews, some perseverance may be necessary to find the right fit – they are not in ear earphones and there is no sound isolation. The sound quality is just superb – richly detailed crisp reproduction that would satisfy the most demanding listeners – i threw a variety of tracks from jj cale to fleetwood mac to led zep and up and coming somerset band last one home. And the b&o earset made all of the tracks sound fantastic. Didn’t want to take them off and, having found the right fitting point, they didn’t feel uncomfortable at all. Battery life seems ok at around 5 hours – needing 2 hours to charge up. There’s an audio warning when 10% battery life is left. The control pad is easy enough to use. There is a beoplay android and ios app that connects to the earset via bluetooth and allows you to tweak the eq of the earset.

I have always wanted a b&o sound system, the are known for the unsurpassed sound quality. In this regard the headphones do not disappoint. The sound quality is supreme and noticeably better than any other headphones i have ever owned. Headphones, particularly earbuds, however have two functions, and whilst i can’t fault the sound, the portability of them is flawed. They are a really awkward fit verging on uncomfortable. I want to be able to put on a pair of headphones and forget i am wearing them. These headphone just don’t grip the ear, i am always conscious i am wearing them and frequently adjusting them so they don’t fall out. I can’t use them for exercise/running but even my daily commute is a challenge. I have a pair of in-ear sennheiser which are half the price. I had hoped to replace them with these b&o headphones as they are not bluetooth.

This set of headphones from bang and olufsen seem to really divide opinion and i suspect a lot of that is whether they fit you or not. What cannot be denied are the quality. They are supplied in a premium branded box along with a fabric storage bag, usb to usb-c charging cable and 6 foam earphone covers and instructions. This is a review of the graphite brown model but they are also available in black and white for the same price. In this colour, they look really classy with a mixture of quality plastic and anodised metal with a rubberised covering on the ear hooks. They are supported with a 2-year guarantee along with bang and olufsen’s customer service which i have found to be excellent over the years with other products. The foam covers are really hard to fit and one popped off the first time i used the headphones so are best dispensed with. I did the same with the original ipod headphones and the covers are not essential as these earphones sit outside the ear canal. They charge up in about two hours using the usb-c cable supplied. An led near the charging socket plashes opange when charging and goes green when they are fully charged.

I have never liked wearing on-ear or over-the-ear headphones, even though i know they offer the best sound experience, so i have resigned myself to using mid-price in-ear wireless earbuds from jabra, jaybird and the like and accepting the limitations of sound quality as the price of not looking like a cybermanso, knowing the reputation of bang & olufsen for beautifully engineered sound equipment, i could not wait to unpack the earphones when they arrived. The earphone certainly look dramatic in graphite brown and ooze quality even before you try them out. They are beautifully boxed and just have the look of a premium product. They are certainly larger than many similar products and the styling of the over-ear clip will not be to everyone’s taste but…. They fit beautifully and are so easy to put on. The buds fit in the ear but do not go into the ear canal, but these sit very comfortably and allow little outside noise in and, more importantly for me, allow very little, if any, leakage of sound from the earphones. I do not claim to be an audiophile, but to my ears the earset offers simply superb sound quality across the whole range for any genre of music. I simply did not believe it was possible to get this level of sound quality from this type of earphones – but the earset is a revelation. What makes the sound quality truly outstanding though, is the ability to adjust the bass/treble mix by a simple finger-swipe across the screen of a mobile phone or tablet as you listen, using the beoplay app available for ios and android. You can save also these settings as pre-sets if you wish.

I know exactly what some reviewers mean about the fitting of the earbuds. Luckily i hate the sensation of having smaller earbuds tightly fitting deep into the ear canal so that is not a problem for me. I do actually prefer very light on the ear headphones. What you notice is that in the position these clip on they only settle partially into your ears and you have a marked reduction in volume and can hear all external noises so i can understand the negative comments. My volume slider was on maximum so knew that this was going to be a problem. If you press the earbuds inwards with your hands the volume increases dramatically. The obvious solution is to wear some ordinary on ear headphones on top of these to keep these in closer contact but for the price you pay for these b & o should have found a better solution. It would not look very elegant either. If you play music at moderate volume levels, the battery can support only up to 5 hours of playing, i would have expected the same life as my device about 10 hours. In general, the battery life also depends on the volume, intensity of music and equalizer settings.

There is no doubt that these earphones are really well-made – from the hinge on the top of the ear-piece to the piston height adjustment, it is easy to see the quality. The travel pouch is thick and the usb-c cable for charging again shows attention to detail and quality. When you’re in a relatively quiet environment these earphones offer a great listening experience. The sound quality is lovely. However, these earphones are not in-ear – they are effectively on-ear earphones – which means that, as b&o say, a lot of ambient noise can be heard. This is why i believe that these earphones are great for offices and family settings as you can still hear if someone speaks to you. However, i also use my earphones for commuting on trains and when walking between the station and the office and i am unable/unwilling to turn up the volume enough to make them usable in these situations. As for fit, i have quite large ears and do not seem to have experienced some of the problems with fit that some other reviewers seem to have experienced. A minor annoyance is that because the only anchor point is the hook over your ear, if you turn your head and the cable doesn’t move freely, the ear bud moves and needs re-adjusting. I have also found that i’m lucky to get 4 hours of listening out of these earphones which doesn’t seem that great compared to some of the competitors.
