FoodSaver Food Vacuum Sealer System : A competent, easy to use, well-made machine

Amazing for sealing fresh meats and fish to keep them fresher for longer. Suitable for freezer and fridge usage to further prolong the life of otherwise short lived foods. Only drawback is the need to buy the bags which can be somewhat expensive, however, the amount you can save from using this will more than likely out-weigh that cost.

This product is an absolute must if you do sous-vide cooking. If you don’t then get started it is easy and gives spectacular results. If you just want it to seal whatever size meats and foods ready for the freezer or fridge it will do it brilliantly. Furthermore it will vacuum the hard side containers with a vacuum fitting on them. If you haven’t tried these they are a revelation. All sin all a fantastic product that works simply and well.

I was so fed up of wasting food due to freezer burn. It’s a bit of a faff getting out the cupboard but i make sure i do bulk batches after i have been shopping. I think (hope), in the long run, it will save me a fortune bulk buying and not wasting food. I have dropped a star on the ‘easy to use’ rating as it wasn’t at first. Now i am a pro and have got used to shutting the unit so it will work properly. I need to branch out in to sous vide cooking.

This one is relatively expensive compared to other products with a similar specification. I am not sure if the price differential is justified or not – it might be. The build quality is good, but similar to products i have tried in the £50 range. It is reasonably compact, but there are smaller devices out there. The vacuum did not seem quite as powerful as some other ones i have tried, but i think it is fine (might be less likely to crush delicate products like crispy friend onions. The closure mechanism is a bit fiddly – it took me several tries before i could get it to click. I almost gave up on it, but persevered a bit longer and finally got it to work. After the first time, it seemed to shut much more easily. The instructions are not fabulous, and that may have been part of my difficulty. It shows the cut edge of a bag curling into a (non-existent) void, so i tried to curl it into a void that *did* exist, just a little behind the imaginary one from the drawings in the instructions.

I started on a bit of a health drive for 2018 and did lots of things like dewy cycling and joining weight watchers. The weight watchers thing means i tend to get food that’s a bit different to the rest of the family, so low fat sausages, lots of fish and chicken breasts and so forth. The thing about doing that is i’m the only one who eats this stuff and there’s always enough in a pack for the whole family. This meant i got a lot of stuff in the freezer and inevitably some of it got freezer burn. The answer to that is vacuum packing it. Using this is generally not too much of a hassle but there is a bit of faff with the ‘bag on a roll’ where you need to seal one end, figure out how much you need, put your food in and then seal the other end. Yes i know you can use the open ended bags but lets face it, the roll is more economical. To use the sealer, put your bag in, press down and press the sealing button, here comes faff 2. Perhaps it’s just me but i feel like i need 3 hands to do this. I expected the lid to clamp shut but it doesn’t appear to.

The unit is very easy to use once you realise that the top needs to be pushed firmly down until the green buttons on the side pop right out, the power indicator on the top will then illuminate with one led; press the vacuum and seal button and a series of leds cycle round, the air is sucked out and the bag is sealed. There are options to seal only and for moist foods. I tried it with some tomatoes to see how well it worked and it did a really good job. The unit is very good looking and seems very well constructed, it can be stored vertical to save space in the cupboard. The instruction book gives guidance on the types of foods that can be successfully packed as well as other types of bags and containers that are available. A competent, well made machine.

The instructions appear simple but in reality they are almost too simple. They ask you to ‘latch’ the product without ever explaining how to do this and until you ‘latch’ the sealer it will not work. After thirty frustrating minutes, my wife lost her temper and banged her fist on the lid; guess what , it ‘latched’. As other reviewers have testified, you need to apply firm pressure after the catches have clicked; odd design, really. The cable could do with being a little bit longer. The whole operation is very noisy; it can be heard through a closed kitchen door. You need to be very precise on the sealing area or your attempt will be rejected. The lunch box accessories are 3 for £19. 98, replacement zipper bags are 26 for £19. 98 and the sealing rolls are 2 for £18.

This is the first time i’ve used one of these and it worked perfectly for me, sealing fresh fish. Freezers tend to extract moisture from any food that’s not properly sealed so i was very glad to try this. It definitely seems to seal in all the goodness. I also tried it on all sorts of veggies and this machine operated perfectly with no issues.
