JAM Audio Contour – Bluetooth Headphones : Good but not superb

5 stars for these, rounded up to five. These are comfortable, secure little neckband headphones that work really well. They come very nicely presented for gift-giving in a box that completely disguises the contents. They charged up with absolutely no problem via the micro usb to usb charging cable supplied, the clearly illustrated instructions are very easy to follow. The micro usb charging port on the control block has a rubber cap to prevent water entering, should these be worn when running. Once charged, a simple long (2 second) press on the play button activates the bluetooth connection. Make sure bluetooth is enabled on your device; the headphones appear on the bluetooth enabled device list as jam contour, which is helpful. I tested these indoors, and was able to listen to my iphone downstairs whilst upstairs, so listening to a phone in a waist belt or pocket when running, walking or cycling shouldn’t be a problem. The sound quality is good, nothing spectacular, but perfectly acceptable, clear with a decent balance of sound.

In one of his short stories author tom wolf describes the difference between handmade clothes and off-the-peg. A handmade coat will have arm holes the size of your own arm, whereas an off-the-peg coat will have arm holes that can accommodate a person with arms as thick as a gorilla’s. This means there’s an unnecessary load of space in there if you have smaller arms. It can’t possibly hang right. Why is this relevant to these jam audio contour headphones?. Well it’s the length of those wires that join the ear pods to the neck strap. Jam audio had to make them long enough that someone with a really long neck can wear them. I was once sitting bored in church and noticed a woman in front of me had a spectacularly long neck, almost a foot long. It made me wonder how her neck could be so different to mine, which is maybe two inches. Well that lady could have worn these headphones no problem.

I have never tried active noise-cancelling headphones before so i was keen to find out if this magic really works. I work in a large open plan office with a continuous hum of air conditioning. I put these on, turn the noise cancelling on and suddenly i have total silence. I didn’t even realise just how noisy the office was until i was able to filter it out. I would actually consider using these without any music. Walking home from work i found that traffic noise was muted a lot but not completely cut out, because it is not a constant sound like air conditioning. I imagine that airplane or train noise cancellation will be somewhere between the two. The sound quality is not perfect, but good enough for casual listening and because of the noise cancelling i was able to play music at a lower level as i did not need to drown out background sound. I found the fit of the earbuds to be very good indeed. The cables are a little on the long side and there is no way to adjust them, but that is only a slight annoyance.

The design is clever, they are comfy to wear and stay in place. I find the sound to be really good, it’s clear and true and it sounds as good as headphones twice the price. Perfect for using in the gym. They charge fast and the charge lata ages, much better than other bluetooth headsets i’ve used in the past.

The jam contour wireless in-ear behind-the-neck noise canceling headphones are comfortable, of a high quality and definitely cancel out the noise. I couldn’t hear people talking to me when i activated the noise cancellation button however i could, at times, hear other sounds like tap running or the television. The collar on the headphones is really comfortable. You can sit on the sofa or lie in bed with the collar on and due to its flexibility and the fact that it’s soft, it’s easy to wear and not be annoyed by it. Not yet tried to do any exercise with the headphones on and wondering if the collar will aggravate the neck and whether the buds will stay in the ear. Although having said that, the ear buds are comfortable and fit snugly in the ear. They have really good volume settings – they can be incredibly loud if you want them to be. The battery, so far, is lasting around 6 – 7 hours but i do wonder if over time how this will change. The headphones are fantastic for phone calls – a god send when you’re on a long call to friends and don’t want to have to hold a phone to your ear.

I’m afraid, for me at least, these do not pass muster. They look and feel great, the design is nice, the neckband is supremely comfortable, but neither the noise cancelling nor the sound are particularly good. Perhaps i am being harsh, but if you are going to try and sell noise cancelling headphones, i’d at least make sure the headphones part works well before building in noise cancellation. However, to me, the sound is harsh, the treble and bass is terribly distorted and it makes for a very unpleasant listening experience. Of course, it didn’t have to be this way. If they’d tuned them to be less bass heavy and a bit quieter these might have sounded nice, instead, the brashness is brutal and everything – even at low volumes sounded quite distorted. The noise cancellation is very ‘meh’ as well. They couldn’t cancel out a single bathroom fan from 4 meters away (which my bose qc30 handled easily, though they do dent the ambient sound a bit. I doubt they’d do well on an aircraft. However, i doubt we’ll find out as i’m certainly not going to take them instead of my bose headphones.

Unfortunately, the earphones died on me after only 20 minutes. I tried recharging it both from my pc with the cable that arrived with the earphones and also from a usb wall charger, but the set was still dead. Later, i discovered that the charger was the problem, not the headphones. When i used another quite different charger that i had, the headphones worked very well. So, if you are interested in buying this set of bluetooth headphones, make sure that you use a compatible charger and charge it fully before use, then you shouldn’t experience any problems. During the time i have managed to get it to work, the sound quality wasn’t terrific, but was ok, similar to the sound from the earphones supplied with a mobile phone. I was slightly more impressed with the sound cancelling option, nothing to shout about, but all external sound was definitely lessened when using the cancelling mode. That is a considerable plus. I found the set to be quite comfortable but, for some reason, the right ear bud was difficult to stay in my ear (but this could be me). I liked the design, and i would certainly consider purchasing a bluetooth headset, but probably not this one.

For the price of these, you’d expect far superior sound quality. It’s not bad, but i think ear phones i’ve paid ten to twenty pounds for have been almost as good, if i’m brutally honest. The ear buds are surprisingly comfortable, so that’s a bonus but the sound quality was limited and i also struggled to get the sound to a reasonable level that wasn’t too loud or too quiet. The bluetooth element is useful but the noise cancelling less evident. I wouldn’t say these were bad at all, but they are not amazing.

These bluetooth headphones are very attractive looking and very comfortable to wear. However, they are not that good at blocking out surrounding noise and, considering the price, the sound quality is not great.

I’ve been using these for about a month. Sound quality is very good, but there are a few minus points. Buds don’t want to stay in my ears, even when using the largest size. Luckily, i don’t jog in these, use them in bed and travelling, trains, planes etc. The battery life is supposed to be “up to 7 hours from a 2 hour charge”. A two hour charge lasts nothing like 7 hours. I find it annoying that there is nothing to indicate how much charge you have at any given time. They usually run out at the most inconvenient moment. Got my pair for less than £30.

I have tried virtually all the budget active noise cancelling earbuds (linner, taotronics, etc) available on amazon and none of them lasted beyond a couple of weeks. I use them daily in the gym so sweat resistance is important, and even bose’s qc30’s have no water resistance whatsoeveri have had these now for over a month and although they’re not the best design – i find the neckband a little bit too snug, and the wires are a tad too long. Also you have to hold down the power button for quite a long time to turn them on and off compared to all other earbuds similar to these. The noise cancelling is reliable and decent enough for taking the edge of the loud music in the gym so i can listen to what i want to comfortably. They have been through their fair share of ‘sweat’ and remain fully functional. The controls are intuitive in combination with the led indicator and they do feel pretty sturdy. They take quite a while to charge, but the battery life is decent enough. Fingers crossed they last a good while longer, as for the money i really can’t complain at all.
