Replaced a sony amp with this model due it breaking down. Found the onkyo so easy to set up but the big difference was the improvement in the quality of sound. Recommend this unit to anyone.
Awesome sound quality with great features, including chromecast. The av is thx select certified which not many av’s at this price range have. The ui can be a little slow is basic, but it works and straightforward.
This is my second onkyo excellent bit of equipment, it’s has got great sounds and with the added bluetooth makes it a great bit of home cinema equipment.
Great product but watch your speakers, i used my current surround speakers rated at 3 oms on set up but could not get a good quality sound and had to have the volume up to nearly 50 to listen to anything , apparently after checking several forums the onkyo 686 has a speaker rating for 4- 16 oms and if i continue to use my current speakers without wiring in series ??. Or adding inline whatevers could damage the receiver ???. Bunny that was happy i was not, nice new onkyo surround atmos speaker system ht5885 purchased (ouch) well i thought , if i have to get new speakers might as well get the ones made by the same company must be made for their systems, could not afford the best they had to offer but with these ones rated at 6 oms the difference is amazing have not tried atmos yet as you need the film to broadcast an atmos signal for that to work but fantasic upgrade from my old sr607.
Very accurate auto calibration. Build quality feels lighter and less robust than previous amps i’ve owned but the sound quality and presence are the best i’ve had yet, even compared to older much more expensive receivers. Cannot fault it for the cost, it’s a great value match for new 4k tvs.
Lip sync via bluetooth is terrible.
Buidt never solid, all the buttons have a nice click to them and the dials all feel very satisfying to turn, plenty of ports and options while remaining simple and easy to understand. Drives my speakers very well and overall very happy.
Crisp and Clear Digital Sound
My top tip if you want to use banana speaker connectors with this AVR.

The TX-NR686 has six rear HDMI inputs, Main Out, and Sub Out to support pass-through of 4K HDR video in HDR10, HLG, and Dolby Vision formats. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X sound through 5.2.2 channels
Object-based audio is studio-mixed in a virtual 3D space, allowing discrete sounds to play through any speaker in your 5.2.2-ch system. Sound moves naturally around your audience so they feel Dolby Atmos or DTS:X movie soundtracks like it’s real life. DTS Neural:X and Dolby Surround solutions are on board to upmix legacy formats for playback through your object-audio-ready speaker system. Cross-compatibility with common soundtracks including Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD Master Audio lets you enjoy spatial sound from your existing movie library or supported video streaming service using either technology.

AccuEQ ensures that the TX-NR686 and connected speakers are calibrated so they’re working at their absolute best in your listening space. I had an onkyo before, so the tx-nr686 was a significant upgrade to suit our new sony oled sparkler. This new avr performs flawlessly – despite the volume setting having to be on a higher setting than the last. No issues whatsovever though, except. The euro-nannies insist on trying to dissuade use of 4mm banana plugs, so european avrs (and speakers no-doubt) have the 4mm banana sockets of the speaker terminals blocked off with plastic plugs having read many forums of people making things so difficult for themselves in trying to remove them, here’s my top tip to do it easily – in seconds. Take a wood screw with sharp threads, a few centimetres long so you can grip with your fingers. The width of the screw needs to be a wee bit wider than the hole inside the plastic plug. First, screw the terminal post all the way down, then insert and turn the wood screw until it bites and grips in the hole inside the plastic plug, then simply pull it out. Now you are free to use banana sockets for your hook-up.
My reason for purchase was that i had upgraded my tv to make the most of the 4k output available through ps4, netflix, prime etc but i didn’t take into account that my old onkyo av system didn’t have 4k pass through ability so unless i wanted to do away with the onkyo sound system i wouldn’t be able to view anything in 4k and why would you have 4k without the sound to match??. So i did a browse and found this with all the features i wanted, 4k pass through, 6 hdmi ports, 7. 1 sound and a brilliant price and as it was onkyo i knew it would be great quality. On arrival i just swapped all the speaker wires and it was up and running but, no subwoofer. The original sub i had with my old system wouldn’t work with this so i had to purchase another (wharfedale) and now the sound is fantastic and i can watch in 4k with dolby atmos too, winner.
Excellent listening experience, baseline fabulous.
Loved everything, lovely home cinema system.
With so many av receivers to choose from for a surround sound system i decided this unit would cover what i needed. It arrived very well packed by the manufacturer. The unit is quite large and well built. The sound is very good when connected to onkyo m588 speakers and once set up was easy to use. There was a microphone supplied to set up unit for the sound system and this proved very accurate calculating the speaker distances and volumes output. There are plenty of options and the unit has corresponding buttons and knobs replicating what can be done on the remote. The display is clear and easy to see and there is plenty of information about the input and output mode etc. It has ethernet and wireless to access updates, music and radio and also offline radio. You do need a tablet etc to access the online instructions that were fairly easy to understand for the full functions available and optional settings as only a quick set up guide sheet is supplied with the unit. This is a nice piece of kit.
In the midst of upgrading my 16 year old lcd tv for a beautiful 55 inch lg oled screen i decided to upgrade the yamaha ax 750 se amp which has served me faithfully for as many years. Sadly the yamaha is from a different era and can’t handle all the modern hdmi connections. I chose the onkyo tx nr 686 after reading many on-line reviews and expert opinions. Nearly all were favourable and for good reason, this is a fantastic receiver offering a multitude of function together with clear concise sounds, great for both listening to music and your home cinema setup. I thought the old yamaha was a great amp but this onkyo is much better and by far. Setting up a new receiver is not a pleasant job at the best of times. It’s usually fiddly and quite complicated not to mention all the dust, cobwebs and spiders you find when you remove the old amp. Connecting up the onkyo was straightforward, it has clearly marked hdmi sockets along the top and the speaker connections just below. Simply run an hdmi cable from each component to the receiver then one more hdmi cable from the onkyo up to the hdmi (arc) connection on your tv. Then connect up your speakers and you are done.
