Sage BES875UK The Barista Express : Easy to use and clean, great coffee machine

The ultimate absolute best home coffee machine that money can buy and that comes from a former barman who used to make over 20 cappuccinos and lattes per order. If you want to learn about coffe and want to experience true taste than this machine is for you even if you don’t know what you’re doing there are pressurized baskets for you to get one of the best shots arround ( all the other automated coffe machines basically use them) but that’s like cheating you better master the non pressurized ones to learn how to extract the perfect shot. Really good quality product.

Very good machine, professional. The coffee is tasty and creamy. It’s very easy to use it, easy to prepare the coffee, clean easily. If you set it well you don’t have any problem. Happy with my purchase, a good product.

This isn’t a one push button instant coffee machine. If that’s what you’re looking for, click away now. This coffee machine does most of the hard work for you. It will allow you to pour a bag of freshly roasted beans into the grinder and have it dispensed into a cup within a few minutes. There is some manual attention to detail required for best results. This can also make some fabulous coffee. I’m not here to tell you the exact answer, because it’s something you will learn through using it. I’m here to tell you that it’s entirely possible to learn how to make great coffee within just a few weeks of using it and what i personally discovered. Buy fresh beans – no supermarket shelf stuff, not even m&s. It isn’t fresh enough and your coffee will taste flat. Waitrose do a few types that have the roast date printed on the bag, if it’s within a month, that’ll do. The included levelling tool isn’t all that precise – i always find that slightly above that mark is actually better3.

Moved on to this machine from my trusty delonghi magnifica, which i’ve had for 6 years. The coffee from the magnifica achieves 8/10. The barista express gets to 10/10. It really is that good when you have mastered the technique. I wasn’t aware that this machine uses a proprietary ‘claroswiss’ filter in the water tank. I’m extremely confused why they went for this. The filter is very difficult to obtain and has to be bought directly from sage at £14 a pop. And they recommend changing it every 3 months. So an extra £52 extra a year to run this machine as the manufacturer intended and that’s before the extra cleaning tablets for the group head and the decalcification fluid/powder and water for the rest of the system. What’s even more concerning is that the particular filter doesn’t even feature on the official claroswiss website. I have concerns about how long this filter would be supported in the future. If sage stop supplying it, it won’t be available. Unlike almost every other item on the internet, it’s not available anywhere else and there’s not even a less expensive unbranded version available. Why sage went down this road instead of using a standard charcoal or resin filter type that is freely available and cheap beggars belief.

The perfect product for people who like to actually participate in the process of perfecting a cup of coffee. If you prefer a quick cup without a fuss i would go for something else.

Far better than my old delonghi prima donna fully automatic bean-to-cup machine, at half the price. You don’t need to spend a grand to make perfect coffee, but take the amazon extended warrantyyou can grind/prepare the coffee while the machine is heating up (less than a minute). The grinder works independently from the boiler and is ready to use as soon as you turn the machine on. So by the time i prepare the coffee in the portafilter it’s ready to go. Sometimes i like to heat/prep the machine by running a single espresso worth of hot water through the spout (or portafilter) first. The machine comes with a filter for the water tank, but after a few months i’ve removed it because i’m not going to replace it, i add filtered water to the tank anyway. The machine works no problem without the water filter, just make sure no coffee beans or grit enter the water tank.

This was a christmas present for myself and my wife. After over 6 month still makes great coffee. Just remember to buy fresh beans (not older than 30 days), clean it and replace water filter as required by manual.

I say to record the batch code before you set the machine up as its on the bottom of the machine and its very very hard to read. This is for registration purposes. I have to admit, this machine is great. The stainless steel version looks so classic in my opinion and ties in well with our kitchen. Now if your new to making espresso`s, lattes, cappuccino`s etc on this machine, you will think that its lukewarm and that might be because your obsessed with keeping it clean or trying too hard to get it right first time and so on “i. Latte art” as you might have seen a few videos online prior to getting the machine. This happened to me when i got my first bean to cup machine years ago. The sage model also heats the milk faster as well. I think the drip tray maybe could have been deeper though as it seems to fill up faster.

The 4 Key Elements of Café Quality Coffee

1. Dose - 19-22 g dose for full flavour.

2. Temperature - Precise PID temperature control.

3. Pressure - Low pressure pre-infusion and 9 bar extraction pressure.

4. Steam - Manually steaming milk to a silky micro-foam texture.

1. Dose – 19-22 g dose for full flavour.

Have you ever wondered why your home-made coffee never seems to taste as great as a café bought one? That’s because most other automatic machines only dose 11-13 g of ground coffee, below what’s needed to create that rich, full-bodied taste you get out of bed for.

2. Temperature – Precise PID temperature control.

The difference between an ashy or balanced tasting espresso can be as little as 1°C. The Duo-Temp Pro uses digital temperature control (PID) technology which detects and minimises any fluctuation during extraction, ensuring the temperature is kept at its optimum range, every time.

3. Pressure – Low pressure pre-infusion and 9 bar extraction pressure.

Creating a golden honey crema in your coffee relies on the right pressure at the right time. The Duo-Temp Pro uses low pressure, pre-infusion to evenly soak and expand the ground coffee, delivering a sweet and creamy extraction.

4. Steam – Manually steaming milk to a silky micro-foam texture.

To get that velvety texture in your milk you need the right steam pressure to draw in the air and create thousands of tiny bubbles. That’s why we created the manual steam wand for the Duo-Temp Pro, that turns your milk into a silky smooth micro-foam, essential for latte art.

The product is great and once you set the fineness of the grind and the amount required, get the compaction pressure right you get as good as any well known outlet can supply. Some reviews comment on the noise of the water pump but this assured me all is working and i’m not worried by that. The steam to hot water dispenser selection knob is plastic and it’s job is quite demanding, it feels like it’s going to break. I have used my machine many times since my purchase and in fact probably three or four times a day, and it’s not any different to when i got it out the box but it would not be right of me to ignore it. The water collection tray does fill up quickly and will require regular emptying, this is the unused steam preparation water but i seem to throw away a lot of water so be prepared, it has an empty me float the pops up when getting full so you won’t miss it. I hope you enjoy the machine as much as i do.

This is an expensive luxury at the end of the day but if you can afford it then it is a very good machine and makes very good drinks. It takes a bit of getting used to but after a few goes and watching a few youtube videos it is simple enough and worth the slightly extra effort over a completly automatic machine. Drinks out of this taste better than local coffee shops even with most supermarket beans. Unlike most kitchen gadgets that you use a lot for a couple of weeks and then never touch again, this has stayed out on the counter & is used often.

This makes better coffee than starbucks or costa. Grind your beans straight into the portafilter by tapping it slightly forward, compress the coffee with the tamper provided and press one button for coffee delivery. This is better than a bean to cup machine because you can control all of the variables. Deliver a oerfect espresso in 25 seconds. You can measure if you have the correct amount of coffee and taming pressure by checking the pressure gage on the machine during coffee delivery. If the pressure is too low add more coffee, if its too high reduce the pressure when you tamp the coffee down. Steam wand is very powerful as well if you want to froth for cappuccino or latteits takes a few goes to get it right but when you do you’ll probable never pay £3 for a coffee down the high street again.

Great product, was ridiculed at first by the missus for spending 500 quid on a coffee machine, that same woman now wakes up every morning and makes a b-line for it. Awesome coffee at home, saving us about £25 a week not buying coffees, can not fault. Be diligent with the settings. It is precise and a bit of an art to get right, but once done properly perfect coffee every time.

Finally we’ve found a coffee machine that suits to our taste and requirements. We used to have nespresso coffee machine that uses coffee capsules and the coffee wasn’t as tasty and strong as this one. One has to play around a bit to get the hang of machine but at the end you’ll get a great coffee just like the ones in a coffee shop. I’m quite pleased with my purchase.

Initially, i wasn’t certain that i’d made the correct decision to purchase this item. I was a little frustrated when i couldn’t get the taste and texture i wanted and expected. However, with a little practice i soon got to grips with its operation and now i wouldn’t be without it. The coffee is delicious and i am very happy with the purchase.

Impressive machine, i highly recommend it. I have been using it with beans from lidl and it makes excellent espresso and a fair amount of creme. The only reason i can think of for not buying it, is if you are set on buying a fully automatic one, however it has been my experience last 20 years that fully automatic ones by default (however expensive). . They always break down and always sooner than later. The first brew when you switch it on is not as hot. This is the only room for improvement sage.

As i sad in the headline it’s like an f1 car. If you can drive and you can set the correct parameters you can win, but if you are a beginner you only go like a bicycle. Translated into coffee machene: if you understand what you are doing, and you can set the parameters, you can make an espresso like in a coffee bar. But if you don’t know about the coffee making process this machine will bitter your life. But there is good news as well: you can learn it.
