Sage SES500BSS Bambino Plus Espresso Maker : Great Espresso

This coffee machine could have been absolutely great but it feels like at least half of the manufacturer’s focus went to the wrong areas. It certainly looks quite fancy and comes with a couple of gimmicks to make you feel like you will be getting your value for money from the price you will pay, which is quite high. Firstly, i’d like to say that it is made of steel, which is, of course, more sturdy and solid than cheaper coffee machines that are made of plastics. The water container comes with a space for water filter, which i assume you will have to keep purchasing from the manufacturer to make sure it works with your water container. In addition to that, you get 2 coffee inserts for your portafilter (for 1 and 2 shots) plus a fancy levelling tool, which is frankly redundant because they already supply a coffee tamper with it, which, in my opinion, does the job well enough if you don’t overfill the portafilter with coffee. So the fancy steel leveller or razor as they call it feels like a gimmick supplied to make people feel better about the price. I agree with the other reviewer, who said the machine is probably too light because you do have to hold on to it when refilling the portafilter. If you don’t hold the machine, it does keep moving. The water container is at the back but this, to me, wasn’t an issue because the lid lifts from the top, so you can refill it from the top.

After my old espresso maker blew up on me, i needed to find a replacement. I was quite hesitant at first after reading the other reviews but have been using the sage grinder for a while with my old machine and it’s been fantastic. Bit the bullet and went for it – so glad i didthe grinder comes with two portafilter holders; one big, one small. The small holder fits the bambino portafilter, just like my old machine – probably designed for home coffee makers. Quick start and simple enough instructions to set up the machine. The main thing that drew me into sage machines was the milk wands as i could never make a latte or flat white on my old machine, just hot frothy milk (different brand). The bambino auto-milk function was a doddle, it took me a couple of coffees and a few youtube videos but i managed a tiny heart. In 18 months of having my old machine, i never got anywhere near thatit isn’t a huge machine but this suits me as i don’t have much kitchen space. The water tank is easy to fill and the filter is a great addition as i’m pretty sure the reason my last machine blew up was due to limescale. All in all a great machine that does exactly what i wanted it to and makes much better coffee than what i had before – soon i’ll be better than my cafe (maybe).

I love my bambino plus ,however as other commenters have stated when using the two cup function it always no matter what fills the right hand side cup the most , i am not an expert but i feel this is not right i think too highly priced other wise a nice tidy machine.

It might not have all the knobs and dials that a more pro machine has but it does a great jobthe auto milk steam wand is amazing, 3 settings for foam, 3 for heat – cant go wrongbeen using mine for over a month now and can’t/won’t go backnext upgrade for me will be the sage smart grinder. If you’re after a basic but very good espresso machine – look no further.

I don’t go coffee shop anymore.

my friend, a complete novice, received this as a house warming, she loves a good coffee made with freshly roasted and ground beans accompanied by delicate pillowy, moist micro-bubbled warmed milk. The video shows only her second attempt at ever making a coffee. I know this speaks volumes about her character. But it proves the true worth of this refined piece of kit. This machine was such a breeze to use, i don’t believe she read the instructions properly. That’s just not something she does. The stand has a special milk sensor that senses when the milk in the steel milk jug (supplied in the kit) reaches the ideal temperature as selected by you.

Very happy with this machine after i spent a couple of days setting it up how i want. One small caveat – it’s not the machine if you are making coffee for lots of people but, if it’s just you or maybe a couple of people, i highly recommend it.

Very good product, a bit smaller than i expected but still happy to have it.

  • Easy milk, great coffee!
  • A good machine
  • Needs a lot of caressing to make it give up the goods

The 4 Key Elements of Café Quality Coffee

1. Dose - 19-22 g dose for full flavour.

2. Temperature - Precise PID temperature control.

3. Pressure - Low pressure pre-infusion and 9 bar extraction pressure.

4. Steam - Automatically steaming milk to a silky micro-foam texture.

1. Dose – 19-22 g Dose for Full Flavour

Have you ever wondered why your home-made coffee never seems to taste as great as a café bought one? That’s because most other automatic machines only dose 11-13 g of ground coffee, below what’s needed to create that rich, full-bodied taste you get out of bed for.

2. Temperature – Precise PID Temperature Control

The difference between an ashy or balanced tasting espresso can be as little as 1°C. **The Oracle Touch** uses digital temperature control (PID) technology which detects and minimises any fluctuation during extraction, ensuring the temperature is kept at its optimum range, every time.

3. Pressure – Low Pressure Pre-Infusion and 9 Bar Extraction Pressure

Creating a golden honey crema in your coffee relies on the right pressure at the right time. **The Oracle Touch** uses low pressure, pre-infusion to evenly soak and expand the ground coffee, delivering a sweet and creamy extraction.

4. Steam – Automatically Steaming Milk to a Silky Micro-Foam Texture

To get that velvety texture in your milk you need the right steam pressure to draw in the air and create thousands of tiny bubbles. That’s why we created the automatic steam wand for **the Oracle Touch**, that turns your milk into a silky smooth micro-foam, essential for latte art.

Bought it for small foot printin promotion 300e (wouldn’t pay more)using ready lyly espresso caffe planing in future to buy separate grinderno water dispenser (to make americano etc need to use kettle)cup heater not build in?. (top of the machine cold at all time)frothing foam is working nicelymachine light but thanks to rubber stand it is ok to operate. Don’t like idea of different portafilter tip than more expensive versinons.

Great product, great coffeereally surprised at the quality of the coffee which comes out of a machine this smallwas a bit worried as there are a lot of machines cheaper on the market, but the extra bit of money is made up ten fold with the quality of the milk which comes from the auto steam wand and the ease of use this machine gives you. All i did was use a couple of spoons of my pre ground coffee, gave it a tamp and the machine did the resthave already recommended it to a few friends.

Every morning my wife and i start the day off with a lovely cappuccino or a flat white, and this hits the spot. Very easy to use, and very easy to keep clean. Really produces fantastic milk at the push of a button. Do you really need bean hoppers and a digital screen to select dave’s latte?love it love it love.

It is a simple though fairly expensive machine that has a two cup or single cup portafilter and has a steamer with variable milk temperature and frothiness. Water tank size is good, finish is good, heat up time almost instant, pretty easy to clean and looks good in the kitchen. A little bit annoying is the occasional tendency for the portafilter dual filter to detach from the portafilter body and stick to the underside of the machine after coffee is made, also when using the two cup filter the coffee always seems to pour more out of one side than the other. The main thing is that the finished coffee is good so it is still a good machine. Not sure why other reviewers refer to a grinder as it does not have one.

Having had the excellent sage grinder for a while now, i don’t find the price of this model too off-putting – you do get what you pay for. Very good build quality and design, but (as with the grinder) i needed to do a fair bit of surfing to get the best out of it and would not be surprised to find i’m still missing out on some of the subtleties. The quality of the coffee is excellent bringing out the qualities of whatever bean you are using and significantly improving the taste of more aggressive or cheaper beans – it really does taste as good as you get in a proper cicoffee shopconsistency of espresso and milk is worth paying for.

So i was very put off by the earlier reviews from buying this at the full price but kept circling back to it as i love the idea of things being hugely well made and full of tech and am seduced by the sage brand. I bought this to replace my alessia stove top espresso maker which makes fantastic coffee but requires monitoring on the stove and faffing about heating milk separately. I was attracted by the idea of something which made high quality coffee but was fast and didn’t require hovering over. I know this is not the top sage machine by any stretch but don’t actually want huge variables to have to deal with for my purposes (did i mention speed) just reliably good coffee. So far i have had wildly varying results. I tried using the pre infuse function but this simply seemed to change the volume settings which required a factory reset. Oddly my first coffee was sublime but ever since despite using exactly the same grind and coffee i have been unable to get anything close despite going through a lot of coffee. Inevitably your coffee gets cold while you steam the milk and i see why the dual boiler is really necessary if you are going for a single machine. So i suppose you either do it properly or don’t buy it at all. I agree with earlier reviewers that it’s flimsy and involves a fair bit of wrenching around to get the portafiler in.

I have become somewhat of a coffee hobbyist having made the move to a proper espresso machine, ditching both my nespresso and melitta bean-to-cup machines. I currently have two machines including the sage barista express and now this sage bambino plus. This particular machine was provided for me to review, and it’s been interesting to see how these two machines differ. I’ve been using my barista express for the last eight months, making coffee every day. I enjoy the process of brewing espresso and manual milk steaming/texturing – that machine has allowed me to develop my barista skills. The bambino has generally been geared for those looking for a compact and fuss-free coffee machine where you don’t have to worry too much about the complexities of espresso brewing or worry about manually texturing the milk. For this reason, the bambino does not have an integrated grinder, pressure gauge, visual shot timer or any single-wall (non-pressurised) baskets for the 54mm portafilter. You only get two (single and double) dual-walled (pressurised) baskets which allows you to extract a decent espresso without worrying too much about the grind. Just ensure you have 19 grams of coffee (for a double shot) with a level tamp, using between 25 and 20kg of pressure (all guidance is laid out clearly in the manual). You can use pre-ground coffee beans or buy a sperate grinder if you wish to use freshly roasted whole coffee beans (best to avoid supermarket beans as they are not fresh enough).

Use it every day to take to work in a flask (not a fan of the coffee in the machine in the canteen). Recommend the ’53mm coffee grinder dosing funnel – catcha catcher espresso ring portafilter ‘ as it makes filling the portafilter much much easier.
