Wahl James Martin James Martin by Wahl Stand Mixer : A good mixer for the price but more suited to cake batters than bread

The first remark i must make about this product is simply this, please understand this is a budget mixer. This is not on a par with top end kenwood, kitchenaid etc etc mixers. This is built for a price, but at £79. 99, which is the price it very often sells for, its excellent for the money. We have a top end kenwood mixer that is built like a tank out of heavy gauge metal, is very heavy and has a very powerful 1200kw motor. The price on the kenwood, about four times more than this mixer. You cannot hide the fact that you get what you pay for in terms of quality of construction and motor power. This mixer by wahl is made out of medium grade plastic. It is not heavy and has a 350 kw motor. Whilst this is not heavy, it does have suction feet which stops it from moving when in use.

Very happy with my mixer, but expensive.

If you are after a stand mixer at the entry level (and are not planning to do huge amounts of baking), then this is a reasonable choice. It has all the basic functions you would expect for a stand mixer, such as a balloon whisk for whisking cream and making meringues, a beater for cake batters and a dough hook for making breads. 2l stainless steel bowl and a splash guard. The speed control is variable so you can control how much mixing you want to do. The construction feels a little light, so make sure that you have the mixer suctioned down on a solid smooth surface in case it wobbles a bit, especially when mixing at higher speeds or heavier doughs. Stand mixers are generally used when making larger cakes and bakes and really most useful for kneading bread doughs and using for things that require a lot of beating to get air into. So if you plan to make bread and want the machine to do the kneading or have plans to make lots and lots of meringues, buttercreams and whisking up litres of cream, then stand mixers are the way to go. If you are only really into making the occasional sponge types of cakes and cupcakes, then a lower end electric hand whisk will be perfectly do the job without having to splash out the cash for a stand mixer, plus you will save on kitchen space. If you are planning to branch out into more heavy duty mixing, then this is a good budget option, especially if you are a weekend or occasional baker.

This is a good mixer at the price. I have used it for sponges and biscuit dough and it has performed very well indeed. For bread dough, if i’m honest, it feels underpowered and struggled it’s way through the mixthe casing of the mixer is plastic, so it doesn’t have a high-end, quality feel but then you are not paying a high-end price. The stainless steel accessories feel of good, durable quality and wash up well. One feature i really like is the suction cup feet – i honestly wish my other aeg brand mixer had the same as it sometimes creeps across the counter top whereas this one doesn’t move at all. If you are on a budget, and spend most of your time on cake batters then this will be an ideal mixer for you. If you are a budding paul hollywood and want to make bread day-in-day-out then i would save up and spend a bit more on a model with a more powerful motor.

Nothing like the quality of even a modern kenwood. The shiny black finish is soft and marks easily, and although this machine produces a perfectly good cake, it just isn’t a pleasure to use.

The main problem with this mixer was the wobble factor. Admittedly it has suction feet which at the time i thought a bit strange but when it was on a higher setting you really need this added security as it really does shake and wobble more so than any other domestic mixer i have ever used and at first i found this very disconcerting and very relieved i hadn’t left it nearer my workbench edge – though it should be said than once the suction feet are in place it still wobbles but seems secure. It did work, it did mix, knead and combine well (although at times struggled to scrape from the bottom however most mixers have his problem as well).

It does more or less everything that you`ll need a domestic stand mixer to do; it feels robust and is easy enough to clean after each use. It has the usual mixture of attachments like a dough hook and balloon whisk, and the bowl is deep so whatever you`re doing, any potential mess is contained. It`s powerful too, and makes lots of tasks much easier. It`s not really fair to compare to my expensive aeg mixer, as this is a quarter of the cost; but the main differences are that it isn`t as beautful and it has nowhere near as many attachments. For most homes, regardless of your ability, this`ll do just fine.

This food mixer punches way above its weight. I have had a kitchenaid artisan food mixer for years which is wonderful but extremely heavy. The wahl is light enough to be picked up with one hand, and although i was worried it would wander across the worktop while it was mixing, it actually stays exactly where you put it thanks to suckers underneath. It has the same attachments as a kitchenaid – a balloon whisk, k beater and dough hook. It’s slightly more compact than the kitchenaid too. If you’ve always liked the idea of owning a food mixer, this is a great budget buy. However, if you’re planning on making large batches of dough you might do better spending more on a more heavyweight machine. But for cakes, this is more than capable. On the downside, the outer casing is predominantly plastic rather than metal as you find on the kitchenaid, and the attachments feel lighter on the wahl than the kitchenaid. The bit i like least is the mechanism for swinging the mixing arm up – you have to press a button and it feels a little on the plastic and flimsy side.

I have never had a stand mixer and have always used a hand held whisk, or for a more moist cake, a handheld blender, believe it or not. However, i am really impressed by this and it has cut time and effort out of baking. The instructions are simple to follow and the bowl and whisk, et al, easy to attach. Others on here have commented on it being okay but not particularly professional, but as i have nothing to compare it with, so for me, it’s an absolute godsend. I bake cakes and it’s excellent for that in terms of whisking the sponge and also the icing. The ability to put onto low or high settings in terms of whisk speeds was really effective and i didn’t really have any splash back with the right setting. It’s certainly made my baking life easier.

For a basic budget priced food mixer this does a good job. It’s a little cheap looking and the black plastic surface shows marks easily, so i would have liked something a little better in appearance. Functionally though, this does the job, and there are a few useful parts like the rubber feet to stop the mixer moving around the worktop and a splash guard to keep the kitchen splatter free. The three attachments – whisk, dough hook and beater – all fit on easily and quickly, and the stainless steel bowl is a generous 4. Mixing and kneading operations are satisfactory, good for cake making but large scale bread making will probably be better with a larger machine. It’s good value for money, and would probably be better still if manufacturer wahl didn’t have to compensate james martin for unnecessarily having his photo printed on the box.

I have been using a handheld electric mixer for several years as i like the control it gives me and the minimal space it takes up in the cupboard. However, my cakes were not quite as fluffy as they were when using a stand mixer. I also disliked the texture of the batter using a food processor. This wahl mixer is a decent budget buy. The mixer itself feels quite plasticky and the black shiny plastic shows up marks and dusts very easily (it was quite grubby coming out of the box). The mixing bowl is stainless steel as are the attachments and these feel much better quality and of a good build. The mixer bowl is quite tall and slim so takes up less room than my usual mason and cash mixing bowl in the dishwasher and is unbreakable. The attachments can be switched by a twist and push movement and the arm(upper half) of the mixer lifts when you push in the release button. You need to do this when lifting and lowering the arm. The mixer comes with a k cake mixer, a balloon whisk ( not so useful for me) and a dough hook which makes okay pizza dough – though you still need to knead it.
